Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 – July 25, 2008) gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving presentation, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

At the time of this lecture in September 2007, Randy had been given six months to live. He died in July 2008. The “last lecture” is a type of presentation professors give from a viewpoint as if it is the last lecture they could ever give. What would they say? what would you say?

I had heard about this lecture, it’s very famous now for inspiring people. My Mother made me promise to watch it. So here it is along with a list of the quotes I liked best from the lecture.

Incidentally, in Randy’s famous lecture here he refers to Cirque Du Soleil. Is this lecture a big deal? Well, it has almost 8 million views on YouTube…

The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman

Somehow I ended up searching the web about the Flying Dutchman. The information here is not verified, but it does make for entertaining reading. We all love a good story and a good myth.

The most famous of the phantom vessels, supposedly seem in stormy weather off the Cape of Good Hope but now and then reported in other latitudes. The term ‘Flying Dutchman’ actually refers to the captain, not his ship.

Silverlit Sky Challenge Attack Helicopters

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eEden1guIA

I think the Silverlit Sky Challenge attack helicopters are so awesome. A couple weeks ago I got a remote control helicopter at Toys R Us. It was just a small one to goof around with indoors. But the controls worked great and you could really fly it with the remote controls.

Today I’m in Toys R Us again and see this new pair of attack helicopters. They are both on seperate remote controls and have infrared firing guns so you can have air battles with another person. When you score a hit the helicopter goes flying to the ground. It’s very fun! I hope you enjoy the video which shows a couple tips on flying them. There are many more videos on YouTube of these in action too.

Price for the pair of remote control helicopters? Under $50 – now that’s awesome!

A Father’s Love

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTHvTSBhl5s

My cousin sent me this. Dare you to watch it and not be moved…

A son asked asked his father, ‘Dad will you take part in a marathon with me?’ The father who, despite having a heart condition, says ‘Yes’.

They went on to complete the marathon together.

Father and son went on to join other marathons, the father always saying ‘Yes’ to his son’s request of going through another race together.

One day, the son asked his father, ‘Dad, let’s join the Ironman together.’ To which, his father, as always, said ‘Yes’ too.

For those who don’t know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile bike ride, and ending with a 26.2 mile marathon along the coast of the Big Island .

Father and son went on to complete the race together. Watch the video to  see them both in action…
