We loved Thailand - spent ten days on an island there last Christmas, and it was just so relaxing. Next on the list is Tokyo, but that's very expensive. Also, a lot of the techs spent weekends in Borneo when we were first here with not much to do - a place called Kota Kinabalu - cheap flights direct from Macau to Sabah, a couple of hours flying, ten minute cab ride from the airport to the beach, and after that it's just sun and swimming.

Chiang Mai in Thailand is supposed to be lovely, but a bit busy with tourists at high season (October is probably ok though :) I have friends who love Vietnam, too. I think it's probably hard to go wrong if you've never really been to Asia - as you say, *everything* will be fascinating.
