Victoria\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s View<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Drop off the music you got Wednesday and pick up the new packet.\u00c2\u00a0 Conrad has revised it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d!\u00c2\u00a0 Huh?\u00c2\u00a0 Our jaws dropped in disbelief\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6how can that be?\u00c2\u00a0 We just got it and have only had one rehearsal\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6and we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re singing it tonight!!!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 We took note of the sign on the front door and shook our heads.\u00c2\u00a0 This was turning into a memorable Christmas – in more than one way.\u00c2\u00a0 I could not have imagined this kind of Christmas Eve even a few years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 We entered and emptied the notebook with the music we had just picked up 5 days ago.\u00c2\u00a0 We were still reeling from the announcement our young music director had made just 2 weeks earlier.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m thinking of writing a new piece of music for Christmas in a week \u00e2\u20ac\u201c just like Bach and Mozart used to do!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He went on to explain that it was common for them to write something new every week for church the next week.\u00c2\u00a0 So, he sat down and did it himself, just to see if it was possible.\u00c2\u00a0 I could not help but think what confidence he had in our choir \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to think we could perform it after just one long practice – and do it in Latin \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that took some confidence.<\/p>\n

Two hours later, the service began.\u00c2\u00a0 Could we do it – the small group of musicians gathered together \u00e2\u20ac\u201c we rehearsed it through twice with the orchestra \u00e2\u20ac\u201c then our moment came.\u00c2\u00a0 A quiet fell over the congregation \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the first performance of Conrad Askland\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Christmas Gloria in D was born.\u00c2\u00a0 And it was beautiful.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A true Christmas miracle happened that night.\u00c2\u00a0 A wondrous story was told again, and became new and real to all there.\u00c2\u00a0 It was heralded with a beautiful new composition written to announce the glory of God.\u00c2\u00a0 A new Bach had done the impossible – composed, rehearsed, and presented his new work.\u00c2\u00a0 And we got to be there for the event.<\/p>\n

We returned home to a house with no decorations, no tree, no dinner, and only the two of us.\u00c2\u00a0 But our heads were still ringing with the sound of Gloria in Excelsis Deo.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 A memorable Christmas – in so many ways.\u00c2\u00a0 Move over Bach and Beethoven – there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a new kid in town.<\/p>\n
