Gay Conversion Therapy Hits the Stage<\/strong><\/p>\n

MOUNT VERNON, WA<\/strong> – Theater Arts Guild presents the world premiere of Pray the Gay Away<\/em>\u00ae<\/sup>, a serious musical comedy, November 8-24 at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon, WA.<\/p>\n

Pray the Gay Away<\/em>\u00ae<\/sup> takes place in 1980\u2019s Minnetonka, Minnesota and shows the collision course of two boys being subjected to the controversial practice of gay conversion therapy, the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod that says \u201chomosexual behavior is intrinsically sinful\u201d, a Youth Pride LGBTQ support group fighting for human rights, and the local community caught in the middle.<\/p>\n

For his fourth full-length musical,\u00a0Conrad Askland<\/strong>, former music director of\u00a0Cirque du Soleil<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Rock of Ages<\/em>, has focused his satire on the cultural, political and theological forces that surround the painful world of gay conversion therapy and the \u201cpray away the gay\u201d movement. This is a big, full-blooded musical with an irreverently comic heart that is also heart-breaking and emotionally charged.\u00a0Pray the Gay Away\u00a0<\/em>pulls up the carpet to expose the underlying U.S. religious, political and cultural attitudes surrounding homosexuality and our understanding of human rights.<\/p>\n

Ria Peth, President of Theater Arts Guild, shares that \u201cCast members have said a lot already that this show is changing their lives and it hasn\u2019t even gone on stage yet. It\u2019s very well researched. It\u2019s a story based on facts.\u201d \u00a0Cast member Jennifer Jacobs says, \u201cThe story and the music provide a pathway for better and more profound understanding of the barbarism of conversion therapy…\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful and it\u2019s uncomfortable\u2026\u201d. Cast member Jocelyn Amouria says \u201cWhile this show is set in the 1980s, everything about it is still relevant and important in today\u2019s society. Even if it helps just one person it\u2019ll have been worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n
