Here is a list of spam settings you can use for US based forum ban settings. This includes across-the-board bans of several domain blocks including .ru, .biz, .info and .ty – check the list to make sure these are the settings you want. 95% of my spam comes from this domain list. This list will not work well for forums outside the United States – most US-based community members will use a .com or .org email address that is legitimate.

I know many forum admins are now blocking all yahoo and gmail accounts as well – I have many members who use those domains so I’m not quite ready to block them yet.
This list is comma delineated so you can cut and paste into your ban settings. This list is generated from actual working forums and spam has been received from these domains or domain extensions.
The global extension bans are listed first (example: banning all “.ru” domains). The asterisk is your wild card command. For example: *@mywebsite.com would ban all emails from that entire domain, whereas “*@*.com” would ban all dot com domains. Since most legitimate US based users will use dot com and dot org addresses, we have banned virtually all other extensions, including the spam-ridden .tv, .info, .biz and similiar domain extensions. With over 100,000 registered users on my forums, I can count the number of legitimate “.ru” email member accounts on one hand.
There are some duplicates in this list, but PHPBB software automatically eliminates duplicates so shouldn’t be a problem. If you don’t want to be complete extensions, then eliminate the front of the list. Sadly, this list is only a PARTIAL list of complete spam domains. I’ve eliminated most .biz, .tv, .ro, etc. domains because this list includes a global ban. I have only included the worst offenders on this list.
This list is not a list of “spam domains”, but it is a list of domains that are used for spam to such a degree that we cannot keep up with it manually. For instance, “web.de” also has many legitimate users – but the largest use of that domain for forum registrations is by spammers, so that’s why it is on the list. You also may consider adding hotmail.com to the list if you are receiving too much spam from those accounts.
*NOTE – This list is comma-delineated for use with PHPBB. This is a SINGLE PARAGRAPH list which you’ll see once you cut and paste it. The appearance of spaces is from my blog text layout, it’s actually one list, no space gaps. You can use this list with any program you like; just format it for your required format. I will keep this list updated when I updated my own forums.
