  1. I received the photos above in an email, the email aslo include this text:

Antares is the 15th brightest star in the sky.

It is more than 1000 light years away.

When multiple Hollywood types were asked ‘What is the purpose of life?’ many gave the usual answers, to do good, etc. Garrison Keeler (Prairie Home companion) said the purpose of life is to Glorify God.

So it is with this amazing comparison of bodies in the universe. Our significance comes not from our size but that God created us to glorify Him.

The universe is so vast it is not comprehensible by the human mind. It would be like an ant trying to understand the wonders of the Internet. It can’t be done.

The universe humbles us, as it should.

  2. I received the visual relative size of earth in the Universe in an email and was fascinated. Unfortunately I deleted it when I should have saved it. Could you send me one? I found your website through Google.
These pictures reinforced in me the belief that there is a GOD

  3. For Askland: You wrote:

“The universe is so vast it is not comprehensible by the human mind.”
There are a number of human minds that are understanding the universe more and more as timespace continues.

I am a great fan of science and follow these discoveries, though sometimes I struggle with reconciling certain new info with my faith in God…it never destroys my faith..and I do believe God is behind all of this in a way no one really understands.

I am just saying that I would be careful about your blanket statement as it is not consistent with advances in physics.

  4. I understand these pictures make the universe incomprehensable for some people. But that it makes your belief in god stronger, is incomprehensable for me. But makes the stupidity of christians even more clearer.

  5. Dear Comment@ary,

I am delighted you understand the mysteries of the
universe! Perhaps you might now turn your attentions
    to the challenges of spelling?

    🙂 Thanks for the grin!

    One stupid Christian.

  6. Wow, Laura, what a perfectly Christian criticism! What was it your Christ said? Oh yes, “love your neighbor as yourself – but belittle and ridicule him whenever the opportunity arises so as to deflect attention from his perfectly valid point.”

  7. Comment@ary: “But makes the stupidity of christians even more clearer”

Pablo, perhaps I should not have disagreed with the above statement?

My apologies if it offended you – I attempted to soften my POINT
    with a little humor.

  8. I don’t understand how seeing these photos would make your faith in God stronger. If we were created to glorify God with our lives, then why would he make something so much more massive and brilliant and powerful than humanity? If we are his best and his brightest, then why don’t we have more to show for it?

  9. I am just glad that I have something to look forward to when this life is over. I am sad to see how many people have put the thought of God out of their minds just because they can’t see him. A short time ago we did not even know that these planets and stars existed but yet they did. In due time people will come to the reality that God does exist and their is no point in arguing with them. They have the right to believe what they want to as do we. I am just greatful that I have felt the power of God in my life and have seen many miracles that can attest to that fact. I am excited for the future as many should be but aren’t. My prayers are with you.

  10. It is interesting that one would disregard the complexity of even his own body or brain and or the complexity and functionality of the universe in itself, and not know or believe in God. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with it, because I am not the judge of anything; I leave that all to God. I’m just saying it is interesting… some of the statements from those who don’t believe in God come across as what we Christians call a lost soul… one who don’t know themselves or were they came from… random act of “science” or the result of algae… ha! It’s funny just to think about it… or if they created them self. No one is perfect, but God… the Creator of the Universe, the all knowing, all seeing… I’m just glad I have an awesome personal relationship with Him for He has created me in His image and cared for me. I am ever grateful that He has given me the wisdom to know the difference between those who are blind and cannot see, and those who know Him. I’m glad that whether or not you glorify God, you have considered His magnitude with this blog post. I pray that he will touch the heart of the lost, because this was His perfect will and plan for you to see and comment on this email. God is simply trying to get your attention because He DOES exists, He loves you, and wants to be close to you… just try Him… let Him in and see what happens… Don’t blame Him for the past unfavorable things that have happened to you for which you didn’t trust Him. The Universe was not created for you, nor does it revolve around you as you can see from the pictures… 😉 It was created for us to realize His Magnitude, and Glorify Him for his greatness.

  11. We must look at ourselves as God sees us: Created in His image and his likeness, so the size of the stars, suns, and planets do not matter because our God is much mightier than these.

  12. The sun and stars are gaseous spheroids, the planets and moons are spheroids of rock, gas or ice. All of this exists in an expanding universe. If you want a universal truth, try science, it provides answers, religion only gives you questions and riddles.

  13. lew – not quite. Religion is far more likely to impose answers that cannot and, by their doctrines, should not be refuted. Science is more humble in that it asks and through it *seeks answers,* rather than blindly providing answers that must be unquestionably believed and followed on faith.

  14. just imagin what happen on the last day of the universe, when all the stars collide and the earth ruptures away and the human will say at that time “what happens to the earth and sky” then he remmember his acts which he has done in his past life.

  15. dis is very educative!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but 2 many damm big words
gosh..yuh guys act like kids see dis
    and understand it 2
    live a little

  16. I strive to be humble and not arrogant, happy and not bitter, kind and not nasty, and to act like a grown-up instead of a crybaby. Anyone want to guess my religious belief system? I’ll bet you just did, though some will not be honest or adult enough to admit it, even to themselves. Who wants to go through life that way? Not me. But if you do, go for it.

This shall be my final post. You’re welcome.

  17. Me and God are personal friends. For those of you who see science as the answer to all questions, He ask me to have you explain what the end of the universe looks like. I guess a wall with nothing on the other side.

When I die and go to heaven I am going to ask God for two things. One to play footbal with my two sons when they join me in heaven. We will all be 20 years old, and two to take me around the universe to see his coolest planets. To the non believers. Would you like me to save you a seat?

  18. @PC – man, will you be ever tired playing that god-awful game. For all eternity! Seeing places would be cool. But I’d much rather do it with the Doctor. Doctor Who, that is.

  19. Dear commentators,

Since I posted this blog I’ve been always having full faith in the Highest that resides in each and every one of us and everywhere, whether we call It: God, Numerical Order, or Mother Nature…

I simply meant comparing human egos created by humans to the mighty planets created by the Highest in Humans… I never implied in my blog a comparison between humans and planets… I stressed that humans are made in God’s image and likeness… and not planets…

God bless you all regardless of your creed, or lack thereof…

    Love,

    Adrian

  20. I first read this post when I was 12 and from there started my journey into science. I came from an ultra-religious family, and several years of scientific reading later, I found myself questioning the core of my religious beliefs. During those years, I did not know anyone who was an atheist and I thought I was the only one. I was angry that such a rigid belief system (religion) had been forced upon me as a child when I was powerless to resist it. At the same time, I value and cherish the enlightenment, that science presented me, much more, because I earned it myself. But, my heart bleeds for the billions of people out there who haven’t had the same privilege, who are letting religion dictate the terms of their life, including what they eat, what they wear, whom they live with, what work they can do, what they can study, what they do with their free time and who they are, in the hope that an imaginary hedonistic despot would be pleased with them.
I dream of a world where it would be illegal for people to impose their beliefs on their children, without providing an alternate perspective.
