Catholic Church stand on cloning of Neanderthals?

This was posted on one of my discussion forums. They poster claims the classic church is against the cloning of humans, but not the cloning of animals. So they wonder what the stance of the Catholic Church will be on the latest rumors of upcoming cloning of Neanderthal DNA. The point in question – are Neanderthals a separate species that died out or close enough in DNA to count as “human”?

Martin Luther Movie (2003)

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBsaRxjOb2M

Video clips of the 2003 film “Luther” about Martin Luther and the Reformation. I have a wide variety of views listed here. I don’t agree with all of them, but I enjoy the diversity. And it interests me that 500 years later people are still so passionate about Martin Luther.

Debunk: Psalm 118:8 is center of Bible

*UPDATE 06/21 – Thank you to a commenter who made me aware that there is no longer an article on this topic at the Snopes website. So, the info in this post – to the best of my knowledge – is redacted and not accurate. I am always happy to be corrected when new facts come to light. Thank you!*

Another urban legend debunk – this time about the “center” verse of the bible. The claim is that the verse at the very middle of the bible might contain an extra important message – and that the verse is Psalm 118:8 which reads: “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”

Did a Mutation Give Humans Thought?

Although humans and chimpanzees genetically vary by just 1.2 percent, that small percentage makes a world of difference in the mental and linguistic capabilities between the two species. A study shows that a certain form of neuropsin, a protein that plays a role in learning and memory, is expressed only in the central nervous systems of humans. The scientists conclude that this critical difference originated less than 5 million years ago.

James Randi exposes Uri Geller and Peter Popoff

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9w7jHYriFo

James Randi is a leader in the skeptical community who has been debunking paranormal and supernatural claims for most of his life. A magician himself James Randi is excellent at exposing the frauds that make up the paranormal and psychic communities. He offers a one million prize to anyone who can prove a paranormal claim scientifically and to this day nobody has won the money. Sylvia Browne has been ducking him for quite some time.

Evolutionists Brainwashed by School and Science – Commentary

This was posted on one of my creation vs. evolution forums in response to another member. It was posted by a creationist to make the point that evolutionists do not think for themselves, but are brainwashed by what they learned in school.

All your notions on evolution are silly and false and you aren’t able to debate the subject because your only real answers are…That’s not what they taught me in school.

Poe’s Law

Similar to Murphy’s Law, Poe’s Law concerns internet debates, particularly regarding religion or politics.

“Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won’t mistake for the real thing.”

In other words, No matter how bizzare, outrageous, or just plain idiotic a parody of a Fundamentalist may seem, there will always be someone who cannot tell that it is a parody, having seen similar REAL ideas from real religious/political Fundamentalists.

Church of England Apologizes to Charles Darwin

darwin.jpg

If you live outside the US you might not be aware what a big deal the religion vs. evolution debates are. It’s a very big deal, and a constant legal battle in our schools between fundamentalist Christian groups and science advocates.

I have a very close friend who I cannot even talk about evolution around because they get so upset. They don’t want to hear about it – and because they don’t want to hear about it they fully support not teaching evolution in schools. We base our beliefs and decisions on the information we have, don’t we?

Science loves to be proven wrong – because that means we are learning something new. Can we say the same for the church of yore?

ARTICLE ON CHURCH OF ENGLAND APOLOGY TO DARWIN

The Church of England on September 14, 2008 will officially apologise to Charles Darwin for misunderstanding his theory of evolution.

In a bizarre step, the Church will address its contrition directly to the Victorian scientist himself, even though he died 126 years ago.
